Original Abstract

The paper refers to the strengthening of steel columns under preload using welded plates. The design method developed in the scope of the author's dissertation thesis is introduced. Welding under load is a complicated task; the part of the cross-section is weakened by high temperatures. The resistance of the weakened column must be checked against the preload and the columns strengthened under load will have generally higher initial imperfection than regular built-up columns. After the welds cool, the welds induce significant residual stresses. The effect of increased imperfections and residual stresses should be taken into account in the design method. The design method was verified by experiments. The general recommendations are provided for the design of strengthening.
