Original Abstract

This contribution describes some selected processes occurring in the DC diaphragm discharge in liquids. Various chemical species are produced by such discharge type in water solutions. The main attention is focused on the creation of OH radicals and on the degradation of organic dyes dissolved in water by the discharge. Three azo-dyes of different conjugated system (colour) are compared. The dependence of both processes on the applied voltage (magnitude and polarity) and the used electrolyte is investigated. The relation between OH radicals production and the dye decomposition by the discharge together with the possible reaction mechanism is discussed in the text. A possible influence of electrolysis is also taken into consideration.
