Original Abstract

Saliva is a watery substance produced in the mouths of human and most animals. The important compound of saliva is lactoferrin. It is involved in binding and transport of metal ions such as Fe2+, Zn2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+. Because of these functions it has an antibacterial, anticancerogenic and anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of this study was to design a method based on isolation of lactoferrin from human saliva using paramagnetic particles to prepare bead-based complex with lactoferrin. This complex was subsequently determined by SFIA. Our results were correlated with ELISA using spectrophotometric detection. The limit of detection for lactoferin was 0.4 mu g.ml(-1). This method has the potential as a biosensor analysis.
