Original Abstract

Polar pesticides like chlormequat and glyphosate belong to the most widely used plant protection products worldwide. In the Czech Republic, they are at the first places in consumption. Pesticides based on quaternary ammonium salts like chlormequat and mepiquat are often used as plant growth regulators. Together with ethephon they are used in cultivation of cereals, oilseeds, pulses, fruits and vegetables or ornamentals. Glyphosate is a common broad-spectrum systematic herbicide which is used in agriculture to kill weeds and grasses known to compete with crops or to facilitate mechanized harvesting crops (e.g. poppy seeds). It is also used in yards, gardens and other non-agricultural areas. Intensive usage of these compounds may result in their presence in food chain which was recently reported about glyphosate in all German beers in levels often exceeding substantially the local limit of this compound in drinking water.
