Original Abstract

This paper presents the use of UV-VIS spectrophotometry as a means of determining ecotoxicity. The method is based on spectrophotometric measuring of micro-algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata in water suspension. Six non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (paracetamol, diclofenac, salicylic acid, ibuprofen, naproxen and ketoprofen) were selected as target compounds because they are the most commonly used human pharmaceuticals, which also means they are significant environmental pollutants. The 72hEC50 method was chosen for determination of ecotoxicity. The results reveal paracetamol (104 mg/L) and particularly ketoprofen (9 mg/L) as potentially ecotoxic compounds for aquatic organisms.
