Original Abstract

The proposed system allows to replace the electric connection of a wired distributed sensing network by a wireless short range communication link based on the electromagnetic field of the network cable. The wireless link is designed such that it provides bidirectional communication as well as a power supply to the sensing nodes. This allows the construction of completely encapsulated sensing nodes (for example by potting or plastic injection molding etc.) that only need to mechanically clamp onto the wire without having any electrical connection to it. Installation thus becomes foolproof, connections deteriorating over time are no longer an issue, and, as electronics are already present in the nodes, almost any variety of sensor may be networked this way. After assessing the current state of art, this document gives an introduction to the working principle of the system and shows the results of first proof-of-concept experiments
