Original Abstract

This paper is focused on the difficulty with Vickers hardness evaluation of SiOC materials. To evaluate Vickers hardness properly, right measurements of diagonals of an indent are crucial. Due to stress-strain relaxation in experimental material it was challenging to evaluate it in the whole range of processing temperatures. Two preceramic precursors of commercialy available polysiloxane resins were pyrolysed in the temperature range from 400 to 1000C. It was found that within a certain range of pyrolysis temperature the material is almost fully elastic. Above this range the indents are clearly visible and indicate the level of polymer-ceramic conversion.
