Original Abstract

The presented article reviews Sobol's sensitivity analysis of the effects of initial imperfections on the load carrying capacity of pin-ended steel I-beams subjected to bending. Failure due to lateral-torsional buckling occurs prior to the attainment of the full in-plane carrying capacity if these elements are not properly braced against lateral deflection and twisting. The load carrying capacity was evaluated using SHELL finite elements and non-linear computational methods of the ANSYS programme. The load carrying capacity is an output random quantity dependent on input random imperfections. The effect of residual stress was also taken into consideration. Latin Hypercube Sampling Method was used for sampling simulations. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group.
