Original Abstract

The influence of a steel beam length on its load-carrying capacity in torsion will be studied. The beam will be modelled by the finite element method by means of the ANSYS programme (brick element). The load-carrying capacity will be calculated by a geometrically and physically nonlinear solution. It will be demonstrated that in short beams, the load-carrying capacity in torsion is remarkably higher than that of long beams. A short beam behaves rather like a spatial body, and the beam theory is not valid here. The value of the beam sensitivity to its imperfections will be studied.
