Original Abstract

Recently, power system has been improved particularly in substation automation system (SAS) due to vast change and improvement in existing new communication technologies such as switched Ethernet, low-cost high-performance computers, and high-speed wide area networks. As a result of these modern applications the International Electrotecnical Commission (IEC) has developed and become a new global standard for substation automation and the Process bus networks are the next stage in the evolution of substation design. IEC 61850 describes how devices communicate in a substation. IEC 61850 can do many functions in the digital world such as standardization of data names, creation of a comprehensive set of services, implementation over standard protocols and hardware. The IEC 61850 is aviable solution to application in all new substations and the integration to Substation Automation. Systems in legacy substations also is the spine for new substation based communications. For control, protection and monitoring, digital devices are used in many electric power systems, one such device is a merging unit (MU) that merges different types of measurements in one device and generates a digital data stream from measured values. This digital data is used as an input signal for other devices (e.g. protective relay). This paper examines the role of process bus in an IEC 61850 based (SAS), where the process bus substation gives the measurements which are used for developing of the network characteristics. The paper provides an overview of IEC 61850 standards and discusses how to apply it for testing sampled values. Consequently deals with design of test set (Omicron + synchronizer) able to measure output data from prototype of (MU). A realization method of (MU) and analyze the sampled value will be used for testing IEC61850.
