Original Abstract

Phase composition and microstructure of silica bricks used as linings of coke ovens and pipes for more than twenty years were examined by means of X-ray diffraction, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis. Properties of corroded silica brics were compared to the original sample stored in laboratory. Transformation of cristobalite to tridymite and increase of tridymite crystallite size due to repeated heating and cooling was observed. Tridymite polymorphism and tridymite/cristobalite ratio differences in the inner and outer part of silica pipe was documented and discussed. Cristobalite twins observable by light microspe occured in a sample of furnace linning which was partly molten during its use. Reasons of these mineralogical and microstructural changes are discussed.
