Original Abstract

Probabilistic risk and hazard assessment are increasingly being used in decision making for a wide range of applications. According to EC regulation SEVESO II the quantification of risk has to be analysed for chemical industrial plants or infrastructure and passed on state authorities. In certain situations the evaluation of hazard scenarios are based on the structural lifetime consideration. In such cases the factor method for the prediction of the lifetime may be utilized. Its probabilistic form has been formulated by considering the individual factors to be random variables and reflecting the potential damage of the structural materials due to various chemical compounds. The limit function is defined considering the target value of structural lifetime. The relevant probability is computed by a suitable simulation technique and finally the risk is quantified. A case study is presented.
