Original Abstract

The standard procedures for the design of filters protecting the soil from internal erosion, namely contact suffosion, are based on grain-size distribution of patricular soils. Due to excessive leakage at the contact of two adjacent soils of different grain size the contact suffosion can cause the local instability of soils and can gradually lead to the loss of overall stability of embankmnets or their foundations. For more than 70 years individual authors develop criteria appropriate for filter design. The aim of this article is to summarize and classify the design criteria proposed by various authors who focused on different particles size of soil and a different type of criteria (eg. criteria of protective filter, criteria of a perfect filter or condition for unsuffosion soils). The comparison of the criteria is carried out for grain curves of dams the Carpathian Flysch in Czech Republic - the dam Těrlicko, the dam Bojkovice and the dam Šance. The results of comparison are described on using the grain size distribution curves related to the dams mentioned. At the conclusion the agreement and suitability of individual criteria is demonstrated.
