Original Abstract

Presented paper introduces indirect measurement method which provides information about condition of the field-emission cathode. The objective is to show that the phenomenon of electrons moving through the vacuum of the experimental emitter is in fact an example of Fowler-Nordheim tunnelling, also known as quantum tunnelling. Using Fowler-Nordheim analysis it is shown that the V-I relation is consistent with the expected tunnelling model. From the obtained V-I relation, it is further possible to calculate basic characteristics of the cathode, including the current density, mean value of the macroscopic electric field or the size of area on the facet from which the electron emission takes place. Main advantage of this method is its simple implementation which allows easy implementation on any device based on field-emission electron source.
