On the project

Aim of the initiative: Develop, test, inform about and publish didactical material suited for use as teaching unit/module in a mathematics course in an engineering education program both in the Czech Republic (Brno University of Technology, BUT) and in Norway (The Arctic University of Norway, UiT). List of planned activities (more details below): 1. Develop didactical and pedagogical material and activities for students including metadata and information for teachers with an aim of facilitating for students' better learning of mathematics 2. Test this didactic material both in a mathematics class in Brno and Bodo/Narvik and collect and analyse data to gain information 3. Hold two workshops on Mathematics Education; one in Norway in spring 2021 and one in the Czech Republic in autumn 2021 4. Promote results/share outputs of the initiative More details on the activities: 1. We plan to develop teaching and study materials like videos, tasks, quizzes etc. that will be tailored to various teaching and learning activities. 2. We want to explore how flipped classroom, active learning and other approaches could be used/combined with standard lecture-tutorial-exercises approach in teaching mathematics to engineering students. For this we need to collect and analyse data from classes at both universities. We intend to gain information about: i) Which parts/activities are preferred by students and why ii) Which parts/activities make students learn the mathematics content (students not always prefer activities that make them learn) iii) What are similarities and/or differences about how students in the Czech Republic and Norway use the material and give feedback on that iv) What are similarities and/or differences about how female and male students use the material and give feedback on that v) What are advantages/challenges of mixed internet-based/campus-based teaching activities at Czech and Norwegian universities 3. The 1st workshop is planned to take place in April/May 2021 in Bodo/Narvik. The 2nd workshop is planned to take place in October/November in Brno. In these workshops, experience and preliminary results from making and testing the didactical material as well as plans for the future development will be presented. Local and national colleagues are invited to contribute to the project initiative, but also bring their research, ideas and experience related to the topic. Online participation will be possible and we ensure for the participants the possibility to interact with colleagues present at the workshop. 4. We plan to publish two reports about the key outputs of the initiative on universities websites, two proceedings (a brochure summarising contributions at the workshops mentioned above) and short stories about gained experiencethrough university social media.
