New VUT 001 MARABU experimental aircraft

The Institute of Aerospace Engineering (IAE) at the Brno University of Technology recently completed the development of a new experimental aircraft, the VUT 001 Marabu.

The VUT 001 Marabu is intended for experimental verification of equipment and installations developed primarily for UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). The reason for such testing is legislation being prepared that will make possible the development and operation of civilian UAVs.

The fuselage of the aircraft is built from composite materials; the wing is all-metal and the aircraft has a horizontal tail area. The aircraft is powered by a piston engine with a pusher propeller. Additionally, there is a small jet engine, installed asymmetrically over the left half of the wing.

The BUT Institute of Aerospace Engineering cooperated on the project with a wide range of industrial partners with the support of the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade. The jet engine mentioned above, for example, is a product of the První brněnské strojírny factory at Velká Bíteš near Brno.

The VUT 001 Marabu aircraft also enables the Brno University of Technology to carry out a whole series of air experiments and measurements as part of other research programmes.
