Objective of the course – aims of the course unit:
Introduce recent problems and results from the field of network technologies.
Objective of the course – learning outcomes and competences:
Extended overview about the recent problems of modern network technologies with more detailed focus on reference model, access methods and routing. Subject also deals with Quality of Service support, multicasting and wireless transmission technologies.

Course contents (annotation):
Network technology is one of the fastest growing recent technical fields. The aim of the subject Modern Network Technologies is to provide a wide overview of this field with a more detailed view on the up-to-date results. The content of the subject is divided into two parts. The first part has a more general form and serves to prepare the basic background for all Ph.D students coming from different departments of FEWC BUT. In this part the problems of several reference models used in network technologies, access methods and routing are discussed.
The task of the second part is to present the latest results in the field. This part consists of three key tasks. The first key task is the support for quality of service (QoS). QoS is important for modern communication systems allowing time-sensitive multimedia transmissions together with classical computer data without any special requirements on the transmission network. The second key task is multicasting, which is also closely related to multimedia transmission. The third key task is focused on wireless technologies, which represent very promising solutions for access networks.
