Profile

The PhD study of study branch "Physical and Building Materials Engineering" is focused to a complex scientific training, to methods of individual scientific work and to knowledge development in the field of Building Materials Theory. The fundamental disciplines of the branch are Physics of Materials, Physical Chemistry of Silicates, Theory of Composite Materials, Microstructure of Building Materials, Durability and Rehabilitation of Materials and Structures, further Methods of Measurement and Diagnostics, Modeling of Physical Processes and Building Physics Tasks. From building technical applications especially the Concrete and Building Structures Rehabilitation, Moisture Rehabilitation, Heat-Technical Problems, Reclaiming of Steel and of Wooden Structures. The scientific training in this field is based basic theoretical disciplines of natural sciences and of theoretical scientific disciplines of relevant professional orientation. The graduate of PhD study is trained for asserting himself in development and research activities which enable creative solution of problems, of new progressive building materials development and their use in building structures. The basic character of this PhD education is the close connection both with scientific, research and development activities on the training workplace and in proper technological practice. The continuous active scientific activity is the qualification for possible engagement of graduates as members of the academic staffs at universities.

  1. Application of acoustic methods to assessing the condition of light-weight structural concretes

    The objective of the study consists in the application of acoustic methods, such as the Impact-Echo, acoustic emission and non-linear ultrasonic spectroscopy to a fast non-destructive testing of the condition of light-weight structural concretes. The results of the study will be compared with those obtained by classical methods: concrete compressive and tensile strengths.

  2. Application of acoustic methods to assessing the the status parameter lightweight polymer-cementitious repair mortars exposed to high temperatures

    The aim is to use acoustic methods: Impact-Echo, acoustic emission and nonlinear ultrasonic spectroscopy for rapid non-destructive testing status lightweight polymer-cementitious repair mortars exposed to high temperatures. Will be investigated repair mortars polymer cement with modified. The aim of the modification of the composition will achieve the parameters characteristic of fire-resistant repair mortars. They will be used polymeric fibers polyolefin.

  3. Application of computer tomography to acoustic testing of building materials

    Acoustic tomography is a method that makes possible to localize inhomogeneities in medium under investigation. The objective of the study consists in calculating cavities in materials by means of acoustic tomography methods and determining the resolution power of these methods.

  4. Application of nondestructive testing methods the properities of masonry elements

    The goal is to create conditions for the detection of single parameters of building materials using nondestructive testing methods. Preference will be test-rebound hardness testing method, ultrasonic impulse method and resonance method

  5. Behaviour of concretes in the setting and hardening stages

    A study of the behaviour of concretes in the setting and hardening stages by means of available non-destructive testing methods complete with selected mathematical analysis procedures will be carried out in cooperation with an industrial enterprise.

  6. Durability of loaded structures of cement-fibre composites with concrete and brick recyclate against action of environment and chemical substances

    The thesis will analyze durability of cement-fibre composites with concrete and brick recyclate on basis of permeation and diffusion tests. The aim is to prove positive influence of fibres together with a complete formulation of composite with and without loading on absorption of aggresive substances and thus on durability. More general aim is to propose a methodology of the estimate of durability of cement-fibre composites with recyclates on basis of analysis of formula and of its components.

  7. Effect of burning cycle on the microstructure of refractories of two-component system Al2O3-SiO2.

    The aim of this PhD thesis is to study the influence of temperature and heat on the resulting microstructure of material. The density of the material, pore structure, mineralogical composition and internal structure of the material will be analyzed on the available high-end devices, which requires mastering the work with these devices as well.

  8. Improving the durability of cement fibre composite with the full use of recyclate

    The paper will analyze durability of various formulas of fibre composites with the cement matrix with the full use of recyclate on the basis of mechanical and physical-chemical tests of diffusion and permeation properties. The aim is to define a perspective formula of fibre composite with concrete recyclate resistant to the degradation of cement matrix caused by carbon dioxide and chlorides, i.e. a formula with higher durability.

  9. Influence of admixtures and additives on the rheological properties of cement pastes

    The aim of the thesis will be the study of the rheological properties of cement pastes with reactive supplementary materials in the presence of plasticizers of all generations. Attention will be paid to the characteristics of the admixture, in particular mineralogical composition, granulometry and the characteristics of the surface, which are crucial for adsorption and the effect of the plasticizers.

  10. Influence of heavy metals on the formation and properties of cements

    The scope of the thesis is to study the influence of heavy metal oxides on the formation and properties of various types of cements with an emphasis on hydration, physical, mechanical and microstructural properties. Changes in the composition and microstructure of Portland clinker and incorporation of heavy metals into the clinker minerals will also be monitored.

  11. Investigation of possibilities of cement based nanomaterials in construction industry

    Investigation and modification of materials at the nanoscale opens new possibilities like improvement of their existing properties, acquirement of brand new ones or creation of so-called smart materials. Globally, there is currently an intensive research of behavior of cementitious composites improved by modification of their nanostructure. The aim of the research is to find possibilities and methods determination of properties and evaluation of cement based nanomaterials.

  12. Optimization of dosing concrete additives

    Modern approach for designing a concrete mixture using additives is their dosage according to their interaction, particle size, presence of cement or by themselves.The current concept of the k-values according to the standards is then possible to edit according to the new dosage of these additives while respecting other required criteria. The aim of research is to propose a methodology dosage of active and passive additives for concrete, evaluate its impact on mechanical properties

  13. Optimization of the composition of building objects based on the minimization of energy demand coming from the thermal system modelling

    Processes of thermal flow in building structures can be composition of material layers can be modified by the composition of material layers. The analysis of internal thermal and moisture processes and effective design of a structure is able to affect its energy demand substantially.

  14. Prediction of the durability of eko-friendly composites with cement matrix from the results of mechanical, physical and physical-chemical tests

    The proposed topic is focused on optimization of the methodolody of estimating the durability of concretes with wood residues content. Pore structure of concrete is of primary importance for its durability. The pore structure of concrete can described by a number of tests but not all of them are a suitable indicator of durability. The expected output are complex conclusions with an impact on the objectivity of using the test of concrete pore structure in relation to the estimate of durability.

  15. Research and development of new chemically and mechanically resistant silicate and non-silicate composites using secondary raw materials

    The aim of the thesis is to research and develop new chemically and mechanically resistant silicate and non-silicate materials (especially adhesive and mortars), which are able to get closer by their properties to molten basalt and will be fully compatible with it. Simultaneously with regard to the sustainability of the environment, it is desirable for production of these materials, verify the possibility of utilization of secondary raw materials.

  16. Research of influence of micronized lime stone on the quality of silicate composite matrix.

    The thesis will focus on studies of influence of micronized lime stone with various fineness and specific surface on the properties of both fresh and hardened cement mortar. The main target is optimization of hardened mortar density, impact on the character of microstructure and possible influence on newly formed hydration products.

  17. Research of optimization of granulometry of fine-grained additions for concrete and their influence on matrix density

    The thesis will focus on studies of granulometry of fine-grained active and passive additions in the scope 0 – 0.25 mm and their influence on the density of cement matrix. The target is optimization of granulometric curve of filling mass and binder in mentioned size scope and maximal elimination of gaps in matrix.

  18. Research of possibilities of use of fluid fly ash in silicate composite materials.

    The thesis will focus on searching possibilities of optimal use of fluid fly ash for production of certain types of mixtures. The main target is testing possibilities of manufacture of base courses for roads, road stabilization and materials for diaphragm walls. Fluid fly ash should partly replace cement while required physico-mechanical and durability requirements are satisfied.

  19. Sound insulation of brick body - methodology and possibilities of its increasing

    Sound insulation of brick products is getting more important parameter. The aim of the dissertation is to find a suitable methodology for the determination of sound insulation of brick body and define the influence of individual components commonly used for raw material mixture (clay, lightweighting agents, grogs) to the value of sound insulation.

  20. Study of composite building materials subjected to mechanical loading by means of electromagnetic and acoustic emission methods

    Acoustic (AE) and electromagnetic (EME) emission signal generation accompanies the formation of cracks in electrically non-conducting materials. The effect of the composite materiál composition and charactersitics to the EME and AE characteristics will be studied. The results of this study will be applied to the design of a new diagnostic method.

  21. Study of fracture surfaces of building materials and rock grounds

    The goal of the proposed research is to study experimental correlations between morphological irregularities of fracture surfaces and compressive strength of building materials or shear strength of rock joints. Microscopic technique along with 3D software projection will be used in combination with the mechanical assessment of compressive or shear strength.

  22. Study of physical-mechanical and durability characteristics of construction fibre concretes with use of alternating waste fibres

    Both organic and anorganic fibres from waste raw materials can be used purposefully in construction fibre concretes with extracted aggregate and concrete recyclate. The comparison of physical-mechanical and durability characteristics of fibre concretes with and without loading can contribute to estimating lifetime and ductility behaviour of fibre concretes of different formulations.

  23. Study of properties of fiber-cement composites

    Fiber-composite materials represent a specific area of cement composites. An important factor which influences the final properties of these materials is selected manufacturing technology, the method of maturation and function of cellulose and polymer fibers. The work is focused on the study of the factors with impact on properties of fiber composite materials, particularly to study the effect on cellulose and polymer fibers in these composites.

  24. Study of the influence of additives on the volume changes of hight-performance concrete

    One of the most frequently discussed issues in the design of the concrete is volumetric changes during mixture curing. The most affected ones with the problem are high performance concretes such as SCC.The aim of this work is to establish the effect of using different types of additives and admixtures for concrete, their appropriate combination to reduce the volumetric changes. This finding is further extended to study the effect of different types of plasticizers and design methodology witch generally valid combinations.

    The aim is to study and create conditions for the basic parameters of repair materials using non-destructive testing methods. Preference will these test methods-rebond method, ultrasonic pulse method and the resonance method. The work will be focused in two main areas, the study of factors affecting the results of non-destructive methods of measurement and processing relationship between the parameters of non-destructive testing and physico-mechanical properties

    Determination of Czech made nanotubes admixture based on SiO2 and Al2O3 on the microstructure and physico-mechanical properties of traditional ceramics (whiteware, sanitary ceramics, ceramic tiles). Influence of dosage and sizes od nanotubes.

  27. The work will focus on the beneficial uses of recycled concrete from demolition of old concrete highway covers for the production of concrete or base layers of roads and highways. Verification of the impacts of contamination of chloride ions or alkali-silica reaction or frost disturbance on the quality of recycled concrete and its possible implications for further use.

  3. Environmentally friendly ETICS reflecting the sustainable use of natural resources

    This work will deal with the development of environmentally friendly External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS). Materials with low energy consumption will be use for the development of new adhesives and screeding materials, as well as for plasters. Attention will be also focus on the selection of suitable insulating material and new composition of ETICS will be compared with a standard system.

  4. Functional coatings based on geopolymers

    Geopolymers are progressive high performance materials with improved resistence to high temperatures and aggressive agents. The aim of this work will be a development of novel coating materials based on geopolymer matrix which could be utilized as protective barriers against high temperature and aggressive media.

    The efficiency and utility features solar heat storage tank are bound to used heat-storage materials and method of use of the internal energy. Temperature determines the rate of working fluid losses. The object of study are suitable materials for the construction of a solar heat storage tank (sensible heat, phase change materials), their physical properties.   14. Study of Refractory Ceramic Pore Structure

    Resistance and durability of refractory ceramic materials at high temperatures are influenced by their pore structure. The research will focus on the study of the microstructure of thermally insulating material with emphasis on their pore structure. Various analytical methods, suitable for determining apparent, closed porosity and pore size distribution, will be used. The research will search for connection between the character of the pore structure and material thermal-technical properties.

    The aim is to create conditions for the evaluation of properties of silicate binders using dynamic non-destructive methods, ultrasonic pulse method, the resonance method, etc.

  16. Study of volume changes of mixtures based on silicate binders

    During their hydration period silicate binders cause bulk changes, generating internal tension stresses. Thus, the hydration period is crucial for the whole lifetime of the structure.

  17. The effect of secondary crystallization of cement on the rate of degradation of cementitious composites

    Doctoral thesis will focus on influence of secondary crystallization additive to degradation processes of cementitious composites, exposed in various types of aggressive environments. The rate of degradation will be monitored by measuring of the basic mechanical properties of cement composites and also by study their microstructure.

  18. The possibilities of increasing resistance of composites with inorganic matrix to the effects of extreme conditions

    The work will be focused of the development of innovative types of materials with an anorganic matrix designed for extreme applications. Attention will be focused not only on materials based on Portland cement, but also geopolymers, materials based on alkali-activated materials, etc. The developed materials will be designed for use in extreme conditions, for example highly chemically aggressive environments, extreme temperatures, etc.

  19. The study of fly ash utilization from flue gas denitrification process

    There are many known ways of utilization of fly ash but also the FBC ash at present. For building materials frequently used fly ash but will be in the coming years significantly affected by the flue gas denitrification process. The work thus will study ways to customize your ashes or the entire production technology of building materials to avoid negative impacts on the environment.

    Study of the sintering and mineralogical composition of the fired porcelain body in the system of aluminous cement - flux (feldspar, bone ash, calcite) - grog (quartz, alumina). Comparison with the properties of traditional porcelain bodies based on kaolin.

  22. The work will focus on the causes of the collapse of concrete highway covers the influence of alkali - silica reaction aggregates. The review of the aggregates used in the construction of the motorway D1 and consequently their impact on the life guards. where appropriate, to reduce defects arising in this way.
