Geodesy and Cartography

Original title in Czech: Geodézie a kartografieFASTAbbreviation: GAcad. year: 2015/2016Specialisation: Cadastre and cartographic informatics

Programme: Geodesy and Cartography

Length of Study: 2 years

Accredited from: 30.5.2003Accredited until: 31.5.2019

Profile

The Cadastre and Cartographic Informatics specialisation of the consecutive two-year master’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography, field of study Geodesy and Cartography, follows on from three-year bachelor’s courses with a similar technical orientation.
In the course of their studies, students become familiar with the latest scientific and technical findings in all their complex mutual interconnectivity and are guided towards the independent creation of engineering work. They can apply the knowledge gained in individual subjects to individually-assigned geodetic and technical tasks concerning the issues of the given field of study.
Students extend the theoretical foundation gained from the bachelor’s study programme with further theoretical knowledge from mathematics, geophysics and geodynamics, theoretical geodesy, geodetic astronomy and cosmic geodesy, and other professionally oriented subjects. These foundations are developed in subjects from the fields of cartography, property cadastre and geoinformatics. The knowledge from these subjects is further extended in the subjects from the areas of information technology, databases, mathematical cartography, etc. Economics subjects are also represented.
During the course, the emphasis is placed on independent creative geodetic and engineering work.
After successfully completing this course, graduates are able to independently solve demanding specialized problems and are thus ready for their career in engineering geodesy.

Key learning outcomes

Graduates from the Geodesy and Cartography field of study with the specialization Cadastre and Cartographic Informatics have gained highly specialized (theoretical and professional) knowledge in their field of study and specialisation. They are able to apply the gained knowledge in the solution of problems in the given field of study and specialisation.
Within the scope of the skills they have gained, graduates are able to independently solve even demanding specialized problems (independently solving complex geodetic, technical and managerial problems) and are thus ready for a career in geodesy and engineering surveying. They are able to realize comprehensive solutions to geodetic engineering problems.
As highly-qualified specialists they are able to hold high engineering and managerial posts and successfully perform the functions required of them. They are equipped with the skills needed to solve complex geodetic and technical problems.
Within the scope of their competence (after gaining the required amount of work experience), graduates from the study field Geodesy and Cartography with the specialization Cadastre and Cartographic Informatics, (after completing of required practice can be certified as Officially Chartered Engineering Surveyors. Graduates are able to direct complex geodetic, technical or specialised activities and to take responsibility for their quality. They are also able to take responsibility for the professional management of individuals and groups. They can also find employment within their field in the area of research and development.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Graduates of the consecutive master’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography, in the Geodesy and Cartography field of study, specialization Cadastre and Cartographic Informatics, have deepened their knowledge from theoretical and specialized disciplines. They are entitled to use the title "inženýr" (abbreviated to Ing.) before their names. Graduates are familiar with the newest scientific, geodetic and technical findings in all their complex mutual interconnectivity. They are capable of applying the gained knowledge from individual subjects to deal with the issues of the given field of study. They are capable of independent creative work as a surveyor and engineer. As highly qualified specialists they are able to hold high engineering and managerial posts and successfully perform the functions required of them.
Graduates are able to work in state administration (at the Land Registry offices and State Land Offices), where they may carry out all kinds of activities, including management (collecting the outputs of land surveying activities, settling disputes, check measurements, organising work on the making of digital cadastral maps, management of cadastre redevelopment via new mapping, negotiation with municipalities, with property owners and other authorized entities, etc.).
In the private sector graduates can find employment with private surveying firms where they will participate in the preparation and realization of projects, the planning of surveying, the making of special-purpose maps, the surveying of work done during construction, the demarcation of complex engineering and industrial structures, deformation measurement, the monitoring of buildings and constructions, the monitoring of sloping ground, etc. Graduates are competent to participate in surveying activities during special construction work such as the demarcation of tunnels, mining works, large bridges and special structures. They can design and guarantee demarcation procedures and check measurements. They can participate in obtaining source data for geological, geotechnical and geophysical surveys. They can apply the most precise satellite-based methods, methods of remote sensing and aerial scanning to create new maps, including 3D outputs. They are capable of collaborating in the creation of modern map products including Internet map services.
Graduates find employment in organizations dealing with large database systems linked to geoinformation and the maintenance of spatial information systems, and their application in all spheres of state administration and by local authorities, by the Army of the Czech Republic, as well as by the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic. Graduates also have the prerequisites for work in the field as a private entrepreneur.
On the basis of a stipulated amount of work experience, graduates can be certified as Officially Chartered Engineering Surveyors.
They can also find employment within their field in the area of research and development.
With regard to graduates’ knowledge of foreign languages in their specialised area they are also able to work abroad.
