The ability of the doctoral student of an independent scientific work on the selected topic, familiarity with scientific work methodology, especially the problem analysis and synthesis of the findings and its creative application in the proposed solution.

The graduate is ready for an independent scientific and research work in the field of architecture and urban design theory, is able to solve practical problems in the field of architecture and urban design independently and at a scientific level, publishes outcomes of both practical and theoretical activities, also in any of the world languages, is able to teach at a higher-education institution.

Entry requirements

The master degree qualification in the branch of architecture or similar achieved at a higher-education institution in the Czech Republic or a school of architecture abroad.
Passing successfully the admission examination during which the applicant proves his/her interest and expert knowledge for a research work.

  1. Architecture and Urban Design in Czechoslovakia after 1945

    The Doctoral Thesis will concentrate on examination of facts, relationships and conflicts in architecture of the II. half of the 20th century that were previously not well-known.

  2. Effective application of flood protection measures in urban planning.

    Masterplans and regulations determine the possibility of development in flood risk areas. But danger of flooding is not only from the large watercourses and so implementation of flood protection measures may be not sufficient protection. Practice shows, that the same problem cause the torrential rains and inability of retention in the landscape and urban areas. How then can develop Cities responding to climate change in nature?

  3. Problems of Czech Architecture and Urban Design 1900-1950

    The Doctoral Thesis will examine and investigate particular and complex approaches towards the Czech architecture, urbanism and theory in the I. half of the 20th century within the international context.

  4. Revitalization of religious sites

    Relatively large amount of religious sites and buildings is part of our urban areas. Because of long-term loss of active believers and recent restitution of property are not all of them optimally utilized. Some of them are situated on important locations inside city centre and the potential of their possible utilization is big. The topic includes research of its historical origins and also the possibility of the new utilization.

  5. The development capacity of vacant lots in the cities

    Nospace  no city – no place – the urban fallow Nospace  no city – no place – the urban fallow . There are numerous European cities having common problems with vacant lots and other blank places within its centres not serving properly to the inhabitants and visitors. How to integrate these places again to the city organism?

  6. The evaluation of the quality of public spaces

    Contemporary cities and theirs public spaces are exposed to changing social requirements. How to evaluate the degree of fulfilment of these needs in publicly accessible areas of today's cities? Which cities are more suitable in this point of view, the classical European cities or the modern ones? How to move ahead for redevelopments and improvements of these places?

  7. The image of residential colonies in Brno

    Historic residential colonies have influenced the shaping of urban and architectural character of the city of Brno. The link has an impact on the contemporary image of the city.

  8. The importance and role of public places of small towns

    Public spaces (especially square) of small towns in the past was the main focus of their activities and the expression of their vitality. During the 20th century, the development of these cities are often marked for them unfavorable developments in the process of urbanization, which had a negative impact on their development. The task of the dissertation will determine what role can public spaces play in the process of recovery, revitalization and development of small towns.

  9. The influence of extreme weather on the contemporary settlements development

    The extreme weather consequences – floods (resp.droughts) historically influenced the development of our settlements. Extreme weather of the last two decades generates a current need to characterize urban development, which eliminates the risks arising from these phenomenons.

  10. The urban strategy and tactics of the postindustrial transformation of european cities

    Topics of post-industrial cities, especially the topic of their recovery, reconstruction, cultivation and recycling areas are common to most European cities, whose dynamic growth was mainly supported and developed on an industrial basis. Like many other European cities whose development was accelerated expansion of the industry, they have also Czech and Moravian cities like his real scenario development. The theory of urban planning as a complex discipline with the situation post-industrial urban development also adapts. Current urban strategies and tactics for renewal, transformation and recycling area for the industry, based on principles of sustainability, have been successfully applied in a number of European cities. Comparison of successful models transformation of post-industrial areas in selected cities of Central Europe and their critical evaluation will be examined. The aim of the dissertation is generally to establish the conditions for the real application of similar strategies and tactics for the post-industrial city in the country.

  11. Urban renewal - urban housing strategies in city centers

    Global change and accelerate the development of the world induces changes in demographic, social and economic conditions of urban development. A new phenomenon in some European cities, reducing the potential for housing in urban centers. Living in the basic functional units of the city, determines its meaning. Restore the importance of the city is mainly looking for a new quality of urban living. Successful examples of urban cultural area of Central Europe, which applied the principles of compact and sustainable urbanism will be a source of critical evaluation. The main topic of the thesis is to search current urban housing strategy to return to the centers of our cities.
