Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student will master the course objective and will know how to safely and economically design foundations of structures at different geotechnical conditions. Student will have basic knowledge about specific geotechnical problems and with basic rocky properties, rock classification and with underground urbanization.

Prerequisites

Soil formation, types of foundation soils, engineering geological investigation, strength and elasticity of materials, basic principles of structural mechanics.

Course curriculum

1. Geotechnical investigation. Soil difference of other building materials. The main factors influenced engineering soil properties.
2. Mechanics of shallow foundations.
3. Superstructures-strengthening of existing foundations, methods of building.
4. Earth pressures analysis. Stability analysis of earth structures.
5. Pile foundations – modern technologies. Static design of axial and lateral loaded piles.
6. The design of hard constructions at difficult foundation conditions.
7. Design of reinforced-soil structures.
8. Basic rock properties and the classification of them. Rock pressure.
9. Underground urbanisation. Collectors, car parks, underground garages.
10. Foundations during reconstructions. Shallow footings and their underpining.
11. Geotechnical tasks solution by means of computers programmes. Improvement of subsoil. Mistakes in building foundations and their removing. Influence of geotechnical construction on environment.

Aims

To teach the students how to safely and economically design foundations of structures at different geotechnical conditions. To acquaint the students with specific geotechnical problems. Further with basic rocky properties, rock classification and with underground urbanization.
