Content of the course
Practical skills: Biography, hobbies, expressing how long events last, events in progress, interrupted actions, moods, personality, expressing opinion, expressing agreement and disagreement, expressing obligation using personal and impersonal verb forms, instructions and commands, expressing possibilities, asking for directions, expressing approximate time and distance, reported speech, interjections, asking for information
Grammar: Revision of past tenses, estaba + gerund, llevar + gerund, verbs ser + estar, future simple, verb parecer, present subjunctive, imperative including its negative form, conditional simple, impersonal use of se, past perfect, reported speech in affirmative tenses and questions.
Vocabulary: Personal data, adjectives describing mood, housework, cooking, cousine, travelling and free time, daily newspaper, hobbies

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After the successful completion of the course, the student is able to fluently use all basic Spanish past tenses. They are mainly past simple, present perfect and imperfectum. The student is able without significant grammar mistakes to describe past events provided familiar vocabulary is used. The student learnt the future simple, conditional simple and subjunctive present tense and therefore is able to express doubts, probability, opinions. This allows him to become familiar with more sophisticated manners of expressing ideas. The student has increased the vocabulary mainly with adjectives in fields such as leisure time, personality, food, travelling. All these skills combined with the facts about Spanish speaking countries provided in this course enable the student to read simple literature (A2++ level). The student is able to read the daily news provided the vocabulary is familiar.

Prerequisites

In order for the student to enter this course it is important that he/she has knowledge of Spanish at A1+/A2 level. It is necessary the student knows the use of the main past tenses in different contexts. The student should have knowledge of personal, possessive, demonstrative and object pronoun. The use of real conditional sentences, comparatives and the use of “hay que” for expressing commands are also prerequisites.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In each class there are 16 students at the most. The communicative method is used most of the time. Audiovisual equipment and internet are used during sessions as well. Types of exercises covered are listening, writing, reading, reading comprehension, pair or group tasks.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The requirements for the succesful completion of the course are attendance (no more than 3 sessions missed) and active participation in class. If the student does not fulfill the above mentioned, then it is necessary to take an "End of course test" at the end of the term. The score of the test needs to be above 50% in order to successfully pass it.
The final exam is a written test that includes listening comprehension and oral part.

1. week - Unidad 1 - Biography. Description of hobbies and preferences.
2. week - Unidad 1 Describing events "in progress" using ESTAR + gerund, LLEVAR + gerund.
3. week - Unidad 2 Description of moods. Description of personality. Giving opinions. Adjectives describing personality.
4. week - Unidad 2 More advance uses of SER and ESTAR. Future simple tense of regular and some irregular verbs.
5. week - Unidad 3 Duties, things that "SHOULD" and "HAVE TO" be done. Giving orders and commands.
6. week - Unidad 3 Subjunctive mood of regular verbs. Imperative and negative imperative. Vocabulary connected with housework.
7. week - Unidad 4 Expressing probability and doubts. Asking for directions.
8. week - Unidad 4 Conditional sentences. Past perfect tense of regular and irregular verbs.
9. week - Unidad 5 Reported speech. Giving information about events.
10. week - Unidad 5 Sequence of tenses and their introductory verbs and tenses in affirmative and interrogative questions.
11. week - Revision of tenses
12. week - Conversation in relation to the content of the course
13. week - "End of course test" (according to specification of tutor)

Aims

The aim of this course is for the student to reach such language skills that are needed for the level A2++ according to EFR (European Frame of Reference for Languages). To reach this aim, the student will learn to use present subjunctive, conditional simple, future simple, imperative and past perfect to describe events, express duties and possibilities. The student will learn to express himself in everyday situations. The use of reported speech will allow the student to use several past tenses as well as newly acquired tenses. In the cultural context the student will learn about South America.

Week 1 - Unit 13A – Conditional simple tense.
Week 2 - Unit 13B –Future simple tense and its use. Conditional sentences (real conditions).
Week 3 - Unit 13C – Direct and indirect object pronoun. Spelling rules of word stress.
Week 4 - Unit 14A – Past tense for habits and repeated actions.
Week 5 - Unit 14B – Comparative and superlative.
Week 6 - Unit 14C- Following instructions for directions. Spelling and pronunciation rules for diphthongs.
Week 7 - Unit 15A- Shopping over the phone.
Week 8 - Unit 15B- Indefinite pronouns. Spelling and pronunciation rules for vowels that do not form diphtongs.
Week 9 - Unit 15C –Impersonal pronouns using /se/
Week 10 -Unit 16A – Imperative and negative imperative.
Week 11 -Unit 16B - Moods. Verbs /ser/ /estar/
Week 12 -Unit 16C – Subjunctive of the present tense and its use in formal situations.
