Building Construction and Construction Physics

Building construction:
Basic terminology, principles of building designing, general technical legislation, foundations, vertical frame structures, horizontal frame structures, structures connecting levels of different height, roof structures, non-structural cladding, aperture filling.
Heat engineering:
Requirements on buildings from the view of heat protection and low energy demand, humidity - condensing of water steam on surface and inside of construction, acoustics - estimate of noise, daylight, how to make sunny housing and leisure areas.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Basic orientation in problems of building construction and building physics necessary for simple technical description of individual building components, constructions and objects in terms of real estate activity.

Prerequisites

Basic general knowledge at level of bachelor´s degree graduate.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Conditions of crediting: participation in seminars, compliance of set tasks.
Exam: The written part is crucial, in case of lack of clarity in written part, it shall be followed by oral part according to ECTS classification.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction to subject, basic terminology, principles of building designing, general legislation.
2. Foundation constructions - surface and underground foundations. Functions, distribution, materials, principles of designing, examples. Water proofing, protection against radon.
3. Vertical frame structures - wall (brickwork, monolithic, mounted), skeletal (monolithic, mounted). Functions, distribution, materials, principles of designing, examples.
4. Horizontal frame structures - ceilings, balcony, loggia, ledges, window bays - functions, distribution, materials, principles of designing, examples.
5. Structures connecting levels of different height - stairs, ramps, lifts, ladders - Functions, distribution, materials, principles of designing, examples.
6. Roof structures - flat roofs (warm deck, cold roof), ramped (oblique, step roof) - Functions, distribution, materials, principles of designing, examples.
7. Non-structural cladding - external claddings (self centring, hanging structures), ledges (brickwork, monolithic, mounted) - functions, distribution, materials, principles of designing, examples.
8. Aperture fillings - windows, doors, gates; surface dressing - finish, floor, underside - functions, distribution, materials, principles of designing, examples.
9. Heat engineering - requirements on buildings from the view of heat protection and low energy demand, coefficient of heat passage, the lowest indoor surface temperature.
10. Humidity - condensing of water steam on surface and inside of construction. Elimination of heat bridges - noncontact diagnostics, options of resolution, examples.
11. Acoustics - sound and impact sound transmission loss - requirements, estimation. Estimation of noise.
12. Daylight - daylight factor - requirements, estimation. How to make sunny housing and leisure areas.
